MICHAEL JACKSON RELEASES NEW BOX SET: VISIONARY – THE VIDEO SINGLES
"ROCK WITH YOU,") TO 1997 ("BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR," "STRANGER IN MOSCOW")
Michael Jackson took the lead as the first artist to apply Dual Disc technology – audio on one side and video on the other – to the hit single format. And in the true larger-than-life tradition of "the King of Pop," VISIONARY – THE VIDEO SINGLES encompasses Michael’s 20 greatest singles (accompanied by one alternate version or remix each) coupled with the historic video for each title. The 20 hits range from 1979’s consecutive #1 R&B/ #1 pop "Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You," all the way through 1997’s "Blood On The Dance Floor" and "Stranger In Moscow." Each Dual Disc is beautifully packaged in a spined jacket that replicates the original 7-inch or 12-inch single’s artwork. Each inner sleeve replicates the original record label logo on its open side – the flip side contains a collage of hundreds of tiny photographic images imported from Michael’s videos. When arranged on a table in jigsaw pattern, those 20 square sleeves recreate Michael’s profile as seen on the outside walls of the sturdy cubed top-lid box that houses the 20 Dual Discs. VISIONARY – THE VIDEO SINGLES, manufactured in the EU and imported worldwide, will arrive in U.S. stores November 14th on Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT. (The 20 Dual Discs were originally issued in territories outside the U.S. in 20 weekly installments starting last February. American consumers can now purchase the box set in its entirety, for a list price of $149.98.) The title VISIONARY – THE VIDEO SINGLES pays homage to the Top Male Artist of the ’80s, Michael’s greatest hitmaking period, which coincided with the birth of the MTV era 25 summers ago. His intuitive understanding of cinematic arts made every new video an event until, with 1983’s "Billie Jean," even MTV was inspired to open its programming to Michael in particular, and black artists in general, a turning point in pop music. Michael created impressive early videos working with such top-rated commercial directors as Nick Saxton ("Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough"), Bruce Gowers ("Rock With You"), Steve Barron ("Billie Jean"), and Bob Giraldi ("Beat It"). But it was the landmark "Thriller," directed by John Landis (greatly influenced by his 1981movie, An American Werewolf In London, and his segment in the Twilight Zone movie later on) which set a precedent for Michael working with some of Hollywood’s most talented directors. Among them were Martin Scorsese ("Bad"), Wayne Isham ("You Are Not Alone"), Spike Lee ("They Don’t Care About Us"), and Nicholas Brandt ("Earth Song," "Stranger In Moscow"). Over the course of these 20 video singles, Michael transcended the video genre to produce, in fact, short narrative films that stood on their own merits. Now, for the first time, they are coupled with the original audio tracks that appeared on his five solo albums on Epic Records released between 1979 and ’97: Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, and HIStory: Past, Present and Future - Book 1.
