In celebration of the 25th anniversary of “Thriller”, Michael Jackson appeared in Ebony’s December 2007 Special Collector’s Edition, in a photo shoot and his first US interview in a decade.

The photo shoot, which was 8 months in the making, took place at the Brooklyn Museum on the 24th of September. Michael posed and danced to the music of “Thriller” in 5 different looks from designers Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Hugo Boss and more. Michael was also offered $2 million of diamond jewellery and brooches for the shoot. The shoot took 6 hours and Michael was photographed by Matthew Rolston.

 

 

The accompanying interview took place over 1 ½ hours at Michael’s hotel in New York on September 25th. Michael spoke at great length with Ebony staff about his album “Thriller”, creativity, current music, God, fatherhood, MTV and music videos.

The December issue of Ebony with its Michael Jackson cover story hit newsstands on November 12th. The response to the issue was tremendous and Ebony was flooded with requests for extra copies from all over the world. In response to the demand, Ebony set up a special “Michael Jackson” web page for fans, with special audio clips from the interview and outtake photos from the shoot. They also offered an archive of old photos and an interview from the 1983 set of “Beat It”.

Ebony also invited fans to ask the editors questions about the photo shoot and their time with Michael Jackson. Over 200 questions were asked, and answers to 13 questions were published on their website. Ebony also revealed that Michael would feature on the cover of their sister publication, Jet, in mid December with possible breaking news.
