What More Can I Give Song Information

What More Can I Give was written by Michael and recorded in October 2001. It was released on October 2003 through the internet only as Internet pay download.

What More Can I Give was recorded for charities supporting the September 11th 2001 attacks, the aim was to raise $50 million, it would go towards helping victims of lost loved ones among other charities that developed.

Michael was inspired to write this song after he met Nelson Mandela in 1999.

Michael said that song was to help people find comfort, and help ensure global unity after such a tragic event had occurred.

There are 2 versions of this song, an English version and a Spanish version.

Michael recorded this song with more than 35 artists including 3LW, Aaron & Nick Carter, Anastacia, Beyonce, Carlos Santana, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Hanson, Julio Eglesias, Luthor Vandross, Mariah Carey, Mya, N Sync, Ricky Martin, Shakira and Usher to name a few.

Not all of these artists sung on the Spanish version of the song, there were also many other artists who sung on just the Spanish version and not the English version.

Michael performed What More Can I Give at the United We Stand benefit concert in aid of the September 11th attacks.

Not only were all the artists who recorded the song on stage with Michael, but also some of Michael's close friends including McCauley McCulkin.

The backdrop on the stage flashes with flags from all different countries finally coming to stop on the United States flag, this was to symbolise world wide unity.

This performance was used as the music video for the song in every country except Spain where a music video was not made.

What More Can I Give was the last time Michael performed a brand new song.

In October 2003 Michael was given an humanitarian award at the Radio City Music Awards, where they showed how the song was made.

Conflict

It is said that What More Can I Give was never released as a single because of the issues Michael was having with Sony music at the time.

Michael's hit album Invincible had been released at the same time this charity song had been released, Sony believed that if the single had been released commercially there would have been conflict between markets buying Michael's records with the charity single possibly selling more copies than his album.

Sony would not release the single even months after the Invincible album had been released.

Michael believed the Chief to Sony music was racist and accused him of ruining the advertising and marketing to Michael's new material.

This was a contributing factor to Michael leaving Epic records.

It was said that Michael was going to buy the song from Sony so he could release it in 2007/08, it was believed that Michael said he did not put all that effort and money into a song for it not to be released. But this cannot be confirmed.
