Wanna Be Startin Somethin was Michael's fourth hit single to be released from his major Thriller album on May 8th 1983, hitting number 5 in the US chart and number 8 in the UK chart.

Michael wrote this track in 1978 meaning it to go onto the Off The Wall album, but it was not recorded until 1982.

Wanna Be Startin Somethin is about rumours and has references to Billie Jean within it.

At the end of the track there is a repeated African Dibango chant which since has been used by the likes of Rihanna in her 2007 track Don't Stop The Music.

There was no music video made for this track, but Michael always performed it first on all of his live tours.

As there was no music video made for this song it made it easier for Michael and his dancers to vary their dance routine on stage.

Wanna Be Startin Somethin was performed on Michael's Victory tour in 1984, the Bad tour, the Dangerous tour and the History world tour.

Akon covered it for the Thriller25 album in 2008 released and hit number 48 in US 2008.
