They Don't Care About Us Song Information

They Don't Care About Us was released April 1st 1996, the fourth single from Michaels Hit History album. It hit the top 10 in the charts in most European states, the top 5 in countries such as Austria, Switzerland and France where it stayed there for 21 weeks, number 1 in Germany where it stayed there for 30 weeks and number 4 in the UK where it stayed there for 3 months.

Negative Media Attention

Due to how much negative hype this song caused in the media, the US became very hesitant about playing the song on the radio.

This hype was caused due to the lyrics, Michael was accused of being racist towards the Jews. Michael on numerous occasions tried to explain that the lyrics had been taken in the wrong context and how he was not racist, especially with his mother being a devoted Jehovah witness.

Michael issued an apology on June 17th 1996, and promised future history albums would include an apology, but by the time he had made this promise, 2 million copies of the single had been distributed.

This apology did not seem to work, so Michael ended up changing the lyrics on any future albums that were to be released.

They Don't Care About Us Video

2 music video's were made for this single, the first one being made in Rio De Janeiro and Salvador, the residents were very happy of this as they hoped it would help the world realise what poverty they were living in as Michael used the shanty towns in his video clips.

The government were not so happy about this publicity and tried to ban it happening as they thought it would taint their image, and possibly lose their chance of holding the Olympics there in 2004.

It was said that Michael's production team spoke with drug dealers to get permission to film in one of the shanty towns.

Michael worked with 200 members of Olodum, a cultural group based in Brazil. The amount of interest in this video publicised Olodum so much it brought them fame around the world and brought credit to Brazil.

They Don't Care About Us was promoted as a public awareness song, it was to help draw attention to the social and political problems of the world we live in today.

In 2009 Billboard Magazine suggested that Michael's song is the reason the shanty town in Brazil is now being redeveloped and improved.

The making of this music video was very important to Michael as it was about a subject close to his heart.

The second video was taken place in a prison with Michael in handcuffs. The video shows real life footage of the Klu Klutz Klan, Genocide, and many other human right issues.

The only music video that was aired was the one highlighting Brazil's shanty towns. Though you are able to view the second video on the Internet.
