Stranger in Moscow was written by Michael in 1993 while allegations were being made against him, this is what influenced this song to come about.
While these allegation were being made against Michael, it forced him to cancel half of his Dangerous world tour as he was becoming more and more ill and ended up in rehab.
He wrote this song which is an R&B ballad while on his Dangerous world tour in Moscow, it is about feeling lonely and isolated from everyone and becoming almost insane.
The song is described as a swift and sudden fall from grace.
This song was the final and 5th single Michael released from his History album. It was released worldwide in November 1996 and was a big hit in Europe.
It did not get released until August 1997 in the US and was not a big hit, it peaked at 91 becoming Michael's biggest failed single in the US in over 20 years.
Stranger in Moscow got to number 4 in the UK and stayed within the top 40 for 5 weeks during the Christmas period, although it was Michaels least successful single from the History album.
Stranger in Moscow was performed on the History world tour replacing Human Nature.
While performing this song, Michael's dance moves included the patented moonwalk.
Stranger in Moscow was one of Michaels best pieces of music.
So much so that although the hit History album had been out for 1 and half years, A side, B side and radio only singles had been released of Stranger in Moscow.
Michael also decided to do a full studio album with the second disc of History, instead of a greatest hits compilation with new tracks on.
