In The Closet was released May 8th 1992 from Michael's 1991 Dangerous album.

The song was originally meant to be a duet with Madonna. She had worked on some idea's for lyrics but Michael decided her lyrics were too much of a sexual nature. Michael decided not to use these lyrics at which point Madonna decided not to continue with the duet.

Although Michael thought Madonna's lyrics were too prerogative, the press seemed to think Michael's chosen lyrics were too much of a sexual nature as well.

In The Closet hit number 6 in the US and number 8 in the UK. The single became Michael's 2nd number 1 hit from the Dangerous album. It was re released on the Visionary album in 2006.

In The Closet was written by Michael and Teddy Riley, it is about keeping a relationship between lovers secret.

The song title was originally Mystery Girl, but it was then revealed that the female vocals were provided by Princess Stephanie Of Monaco, originally meant for Madonna.

Michael performed a short version of In The Closet on his History World Tour, he used the intro of She Drives Me Wild, and included Scream and They Don't Care About Us. The part where Princess Stephanie Of Monaco's vocals cuts it were replaced with Michael's live speech on the single.

He did not perform In The Closet on his Dangerous World Tour.

Michael made several remixes of the song which were released on a Maxi CD.

In the Closet Video

In The Closet music video features Naomi Campbell playing the part of Princess Stephanie Of Monaco.

Naomi is miming Princess Stephanie Of Monaco's vocals in the video.

The press questioned Michael's sexuality over this song, as the saying “In The Closet” is often a term used for homosexuals. Michael tried to get rid of these rumours with his seductive dancing in the video with Naomi Campbell.
