Butterflies was the 3rd single to be released off the Invincible album in 2001, originally meant to be released in 2001, but Sony cancelled its release for unknown reasons.
Butterflies was only released as promotional single to the US radio's reaching number 14 in the charts. The single got to number 2 in the R&B charts purely from airplay.
Michael claimed it was his favourite song from the Invincible album.
Butterflies was released instead of Cry in the US because of the September 11th attacks.
The song was written by Marsha Ambrosius from the band Floetry and music producer Andre Harris.
Marsha wrote the song while she was in high school in 1997 and provided the backing vocals for the song.
